A Decade Of Adventure – Bushcraft Bivvy Night – October 2006

I’ve been writing blog posts on DeanRead.net for over 10 years now, I used to have the DeanRead.com domain but I let it slip out of my grasp… long story :-) I started making a website to keep my friends and family updated on my adventures but it has since become a place where I can look back with fond memories. I’ll be the first to admit that since my focus has moved to YouTube my website has taken a back seat, every now and then I’ll catch up with my updates and also take a look back at things I’ve done in the past. It came to my attention this morning that it has been 10 years to the day since I first wrote a post about our Bushcraft trips, or what I now call Forest Wild Camping. All the old post are contained within the archives on an old version of the site but are still online for all to see. As this trip was particularly special to us I thougt I’d bring it over to the current site, update it with some more images but leave the words as they were… Here is that post and here is too the mext 10 years of adventures :-)

I’ve just arrived home from a great night up in the forest. We set off from Jay’s house at around 14:30 yesterday, all of us travelling light in comparison to previous trips. My new Berghaus C7 rucksack was an easy 11 kilograms. Thats my aim from now on, travel as light as possible with only the essentials for 24hrs away. The only extravagence we had on this trip was Jay’s radio.

It took us approximetly 2 hours to walk to the top secret Bushcraft location, which is a lovely forest upon a hill with great views from its perimeter. The forest comprises mainly of pine trees and low lying ferns etc. The spot we chose was fairly dense, there was no danger of getting much wind passing through which could make us cold or make fire lighting a drama. Plenty of firewood is readily available in the area, although we did use our axe to harvest some more substantial pieces.

Firstly we set up our shelter, as there was 5 of us we used 3 tarps. Then we got our fire going using tinder and a fire steal. We cooked our meals then had a good old knees up around the camp fire.

During the night we did get some rain but the shelter kept us dry, I was awake early and got the fire going again for breakfast. After all the cooking had finished we let the fire burn out. We used some remaining water to kill the embers on the fire, then we begun the process of making the site look like no one had ever set foot there.

A great time was had by all. We got chance to brush up on old skills and learn some new ones. I can’t wait till the next outing !!

As an added bonus here is a video we recorded in November 2006 and it has been live on Jay’s channel ever since. It was recorded on my old Nokia N70 and it features me doing a bit of a run down of the kit that we were taking with us back then. Some of that same kit is still coming along wih us now and its only recently that I’ve retired that trusty old Army Issue Goretex Bivvy Bag.

If you would like to watch more of our videos then you can do so by heading to our YouTube channels.

Forest Wild Camp – DJI Phantom 4 & DD Hammock

In this video I head up to the usual forest armed with my DJI Phantom 4 to meet Ray and Jay aka GoonieBushcraft. I’d been wanting to take the drone with me for some time but the weather hadn’t been kind to me in the past. Even though it was pretty windy I managed to capture some aerial footage of the area on my way up to the forest.

I walked via Ogston Reservoir and got a shot that I’d had in mind since I saw the early models of the DJI Phantom. I was never really convinced by the early models that required you to buy a gimbal and use a GoPro, things changed however when they started to come with a built in camera… Anyway, I digress. There was a strong cross wind during this first flight but I was surprised at how well it faired and the footage came out smoothly. There is a snippet of video where I have the camera looking downwards towards the reservoir overflow and you might notice the drone is turning to the right ever so slightly… the wind was particularly strong at that point.

After walking past Ogston Reservoir I walked in the direction of the forest, there was another shot that I’d wanted to get and today was the day. I had discussed it with Jay and Ray in the weeks before, I’d fly the drone towards them and get close enough to see them waving back. Due to the strength of the I didn’t want to get too close just incase a strong gust took the drone and slammed it in to the ground. Jay rang me beforehand and warned me about how strong the wind was so I was extra careful. Thankfully the stability and agility of the Phantom 4 was more than a match for the conditions and I got the shot that I’d envisaged.

It was really great to see the forest and the surrounding area in a different way, we have been going up and sitting on that cliff edge for more years than I can remember so it was great to look back at it from a different perspective. Later that evening I flew above the forest during the sunset sequence and you can even make out the lonely spider tree in the image below that has fallen in the clearing.

forest-wild-camp-dji-hammock13

We had a really great night in the forest and it was nice to get up there relatively early so we had the afternoon to relax. I love autumn but the daylight hours are reducing at a worryingly quick rate and it will soon mean that it is dark by 17:00.

The sunset was absolutely breathtaking, I managed to take it all in after flying the drone for a while. In the video you will see the sequence which includes some fireside timelapsing and star lapses. Many thanks for watching the video if you have, if you haven’t why not click play now :-)

Peak District – Great Northern Bushcraft Conference – May 16

This video sees my friend Jay and I attend the Great Northern Bushcraft Conference at Edale in the Derbyshire Peak District. The event is a meet up of like minded people many of which are fellow YouTube creators. After a pitching up then saying hello we decided it would be rude not to visit the Old Nags Head and sample some food and ale. We then had a walk up Mam Tor and watched a group of paraglyders soaring around on the breeze. It was then time to head back down via Hollins Cross for an evening of socialising and drone flying… A huge thank you to John aka North East Bushcrafter for letting me fly his DJI Phantom 3 Drone… I need one :-)

Forest Wild Camp - My Kit List & The Alpkit Hunka Bivvy

Forest Wild Camp - My Kit List & The Alpkit Hunka Bivvy We've had a window of good weather in the UK recently so this was a last minute decision to head out to meet my friends Jay & Ray in the regular forest. We were treated to a great night under the stars and it was my first outing in the Alpkit Hunka XL Bivvy Bag. I've had many requests over the past couple of years to do a kit list, I've included a run down of the items I take with me regularly on Wild Camping trips. Peak District – Three Shire Heads & Shutlingsloe

In this video I parked at the Cat & Fiddle Inn and then headed over the moors towards Danebower and the old Colliery Chimney. After skipping over the very wet and boggy ground while following the river down stream I arrived at the border between Staffordshire, Cheshire and my beloved Derbyshire. Three Shire Heads is a fantastic spot and it is here that those 3 counties converge as the names suggests, It’s well worth a visit and is the perfect place to stop for lunch or even just a breather. There was already another photographer there so I chatted to him while shooting a few time lapses of the waterfalls.

After relaxing a the waterfalls for around 30 minutes and soaking up some sun I ventured in to Cheshire and then up and over the hill towards Shutlingsloe. I was very pleased to hear one of the most distinctive sounds of the warmer Peak District months, the call of the Curlew which is a ground nesting bird that heads back here after winter. That sound can only mean one thing, spring is here and I can stop packing my down jacket when camping :-)

Have a listen to the sound of the Curlew

After climbing up and over the moors I dropped down to very picturesque Wildboarclough. The sun was well and truly out to play and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. It was nice and peaceful as I walked down past St Saviour’s Church towards the bridge of Clough Brook. I turned left and then sharp right up Banktop Road to begin the climb up towards Shutlingsloe.

After a nice sharp and steep ascent I arrived at the summit of Shutlingsloe. It is a very satisfying trek up and the views are well worth the effort. Sadly, it was a little hazy today so I couldn’t capture the vistas fully in the video or in the images.

After a short lunch break near the trig pillar I headed back down hill once more and continued along Banktop Road where I’d branched off earlier. The path weaves along the hill and then down to the river before you have to venture through Clough House Farm, I waved hello to the rather vocal dogs who were guarding the farm yard and made my way over the road to begin walking up Cumberland Brook.

I felt like I was in my element today, the sun was shining, the air was fresh, I was walking in the hills and all of a sudden I was walking through a pine forest. I was enjoying the day so much I decided to record an AudioBoom which you can listen to below.

After another nice climb out of the valley I was back on the path that I’d walked along earlier that day up near Whetstone Ridge, it was then only a short wander back to the car at the Cat & Fiddle Inn. If you would like to follow the route you can do so by downloading my GPX Track via this link at the ViewRanger Website.
