North York Moors – Coastal Path & Roseberry Topping

It is currently the school holidays here in the UK so my daughter and I decided to head out on a spare of the moment camping trip. We only had 3 Days / 2 Nights and I thought I’d not be selfish (this time) and let her choose…. The seaside always wins. I immediately thought of somewhere I’d not been for many years and I knew she’d love it. Robin Hood’s Bay in the North York Moors National Park.

I quickly googled campsites in the Robin Hood’s Bay area and the first one that appeared was Hooks House Farm, It looked ideal for what we wanted. It has great views across the bay, cheap, cheerful and with good facilities. I chucked all the camping gear in the boot, grabbed snacks and we set off northeastward.

The drive took about 2 & 1/2 hours and we managed to find the campsite, pitch the tent and wander down the hill to the beach within another 30 minutes or so. The last time I’d visited Robin Hood’s Bay was with school when I was around 10 years old, we had been on an adventure holiday in the North York Moors and had come to find some fossils. Amy and I hunted for some ourselves today but due to the fact I was armed with no real knowledge of what the heck I was looking for we found nothing of real significance :-)

north-york-moors-16

After a wander along the beach we headed to the old town and I spotted the official end / start of the Wainwright Coast to Coast walk. I’d love to have a go at that myself one day but for now I’ll stick to day dreaming and try and dedicate some time to do it in the next few years.

We then slogged back up the hill to the campsite where I then sat and soaked up the views. The sun set behind me as I watched the colours change on the hills at the opposite side of the bay.

north-york-moors-2

The following morning we had a very leisurely start, I really do mean a leisurely start, by the time we had got on our way it was 12pm. We walked down the hill and picked up the beginning of the walk we had planned for the day, 7-8 miles along the Cleveland Way to Whitby.

The views along the coastal path were absolutely stunning and we had managed to bag some perfect weather too. The path meanders up and down and side to side as the cliff edge weaves all the way to Whitby.

north-york-moors-3

north-york-moors-4

north-york-moors-5

Once we had arrived in Whitby we had to do what every one must do when visiting a seaside town I guess, go and get some Fish & Chips. I had also promised / bribed Amy with ice cream too which I’m sure was the thing that kept her going as we climbed some of the inclines on the way there.

north-york-moors-6

Thankfully we had done all we wanted to do in Whitby as the rain arrived, so it was a quick dash for the bus to take us back to the campsite. The evening was then spent listening to the sound of the rain hammer on the tent.

north-york-moors-7

The following day we managed to get up and away in record time, 9am. Not much of a record really but considering it took us until 12pm the day before I’d consider that a win :-)

We went for a drive up on to the moors and then down in to Goathland, to see if we could catch a glimpse of the steam train passing through. Sadly, it had just began to leave the station as we rounded the corner so we’ll just have to return again for another holiday again soon.

After a very scenic drive through Esk Dale (not the Cumbrian one that I know and love but Yorkshires version) we made our way around to Newton under Roseberry for a walk up Roseberry Topping. Amy took one look at it from the road and decided that reading a book in the car was more appealing than a slog up to the top. I decided to travel light and went for a quick dash up to the top as quickly as my fitness would allow.

north-york-moors-8

north-york-moors-10

north-york-moors-11

From memory I think the first time I remember hearing about Roseberry Topping was in Trail Magazine many moons ago. They had an interview with the legendary British Mountaineer Alan Hinkes who became a bit of a hero of mine when we first got into walking hills / mountains. I’m sure he needs no formal introduction but here goes. Alan Hinkes OBE is the first British mountaineer to have claimed all 14 mountains with elevations greater than 8000 metres… Everest… K2… Kanchenjunga… Etc etc. in that trail magazine interview I remember him saying that his favourite hill was Roseberry Topping so since then it has been on my bagging list as and when I had the time…. That time was now :-)

north-york-moors-12

Roseberry Topping is a great looking hill that stands at a lofty 320 metres and is affectionately known as Yorkshire’s Matterhorn. The route up from the road at Newton under Roseberry begins gradually along a farm track and then rises sharply once you reach the forest. A short sharp slog upwards and you come back out in to the open again and I then took the path directly up towards the top.

The views from the the top today were absolutely fantastic, the moors to the south and to the east were looking very inviting but sadly we had limited time today. Just as I was admiring the views a plane swooped down and flew past just at the perfect moment so I could catch it on video (see the movie of this trip at YouTube.com/DeanRead). I only stayed a short while at the summit before making my way back down so we could continue our journey home.

I really enjoyed the short, last minute trip to the North York Moors. It’s somewhere I haven’t visited as much as I’d like to and this trip has certainly wet my appetite for more. Our wander along the Cleveland Way has got me hatching plans with my partner about a possible trek next year… As always, thanks for visiting, reading, looking, listening and or watching. Drop me a comment on this post if you have any must do route suggestions for the North York Moors.

Peak District – The Roaches & Lud’s Church

This week I headed out to meet my friend Andy for another very wet and wild wander in the glorious Peak District. We parked up at Gradbach and made our way up and over the moors to the southern slopes of Hen Cloud, from there we battled through the wind and some heavy rain towards the top of the Roaches.

The next stop was the impressive Lud’s Church which has a fascinating and colourful history. We then had a short wander following the River Dane back to the car….. Then as is customary, coffee and cake but this time it was at Flash Bar Stores.

More images and words coming very soon.

Peak District - Kinder Scout - Hayfield Route

Peak District - Kinder Scout - Hayfield Route This weeks wander was a nostalgic return to a classic route that I've no doubt many people watching will have done... Kinder Scout's western edge from Hayfield. It is such a great walk that I'd have to say is up there in my top 5 Peak District wanders. The route starts at the Bowden Bridge Quarry car park and then climbs up to Kinder via the Kinder Reservoir and William Clough. On my way across to Kinder Low I visit part of the wreckage of 2 Canadian Sabre Jets, A spot held sacred by the Aetherius society and Kinder Downfall. On the way down I visit the notoriously hard to find Kinder Low Cavern before arriving back at the car. This route is jam packed full of great sights and points of interest and its a must for any visitor to the Glorious Peak District. Related Links. Asia Trip - Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

Asia Trip - Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Today was a very good day indeed, we got to do the one thing I had hoped to do while in Kuala Lumpur and that was to visit the top of the Petronas Twin Towers. We arrived early and got our tickets to firstly take a ride to the sky bridge and then to the viewing deck at the top. The Petronas Twin Towers are currently the tallest twin towers in the world and they were the tallest building in the world from 1998 - 2004. After our visit we had a wander around the KLCC shopping centre in the basement of the towers and checked out the F1 Display. Next weekend is the Formula 1 Malaysian Grand Prix so there was a big Mercedes Display and also a Sauber Petronas F1 Car, Lewis Hamilton & Nico Rosberg are due to be making an appearance in a few days but we are heading to Cambodia tomorrow. Asia Trip - Train from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia

Asia Trip - Train from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia Today was a relatively relaxed and uneventful day in comparison to recent ones. We got the train from Singapore at 8:30am from the Woodlands Checkpoint after clearing immigration to enter Malaysia. We then had a 7 hour train ride through the jungle landscape of Malaysia to the capital Kuala Lumpur. We had chosen to ride in an air conditioned carriage this time which sadly had steamed windows so not a great deal could be seen as we headed north. We arrived in KL at 16:00, got free wifi in the station and booked a hotel around the corner. A relaxed evening was had before we called it a night in preparation for a visit to the Petronas Twin Towers tomorrow. Asia Trip - Flying From Phuket Thailand To Singapore

Asia Trip - Flying From Phuket Thailand To Singapore Our Asia adventure moves further south in this video as we fly out of Phuket in Thailand bound for Singapore. We arrived at lunch time and had a wander around the city for a while. I then went back to the hotel and utilised the super fast wifi to upload the backlog of videos I had from the trip. Thankfully the upload speed was 10mbps so I managed to upload 5 videos within an hour.... Asia Trip - Koh Phi Phi Island

Asia Trip - Koh Phi Phi Island Today's adventure saw us head for the beautiful island of Koh Phi Phi to spend a couple of days there. We got the ferry from Phuket and spent a great day wandering around the island, we then head up the hill to check out the spectacular views from the sunset viewpoint. Koh Phi Phi was hit by a tsunami on Boxing Day 2004 and it had been a place I'd been interested in visiting for some time, I wasn't disappointed. London Weekend – Morrissey at the O2 Arena

This weekend my partner and I went to London to see Morrissey at the O2 Arena and I thought I’d record a vlog of the proceedings. We set off from home and made our way down to London via Mark Knopfler’s British Grove Studios in Chiswick. We had booked to stay for a night at the Hilton at Canary Wharf, needless to say it was a little more plush than my preferred night on the forest floor or under canvas. From Canary Wharf we jumped on the Underground and went for pre gig food in China Town before heading to the O2 Arena.

It was the first time I’d been to the O2 and Morrissey put on a great show, he played some classic Smiths tracks along with his solo work. His latest album “World Peace Is None Of Your Business” has been received well by the music press and I rate it as one of my favourite post Smiths records. Sadly due to a dispute with the record label it was pulled from the shelves not long after release, during the show all the other members of his band were wearing t-shirts with the words “Fuck Harvest Records”.

Morrissey was on top form and gave a haunting rendition of “Asleep” after saying “Remember Me, Forget My Fate”, which obviously made me think about recent news that he is suffering from a form of cancer. He also mentioned that he took great pleasure from hearing that more than 70% of chickens being sold in the UK are contaminated with the Campylobacter bug, He then went on to play “Meat Is Murder” while the screens behind the band showed footage of animals being inhumanly slaughtered. The final track of the night was “Everyday is like sunday”, during which dozens of fans attempted to jump the barrier and storm past security to lay a hand on the man himself :-) That was my first Morrissey Live experience but I must admit I’d seen in past concert footage that fans did that. All in all it was an excellent night and I was so glad we managed to get tickets, He was only playing 1 night in England before heading to Dublin so who knows when or if he will return again.

The following day we headed to the Imperial War Museum, a place I’d been wanting to visit for a long while. That’s the only problem when visiting London for just a weekend, there are so many great museums that you could easily spend a week just visiting them. At the IWM we spent 3 to 4 hours just in the First World War Exhibit which I was very impressed by, impressed by the detail and story telling but obviously shocked by the tales themselves.

After the Imperial War Museum we headed for Westminster, the Cenotaph at Whitehall and then to Trafalgar square before heading back to pick up the car from Canary Wharf. It was a very brief visit but I’m sure we will return again soon. I feel at home in the countryside but I don’t mind visiting a city every now and then.

Bushcraft – Bivvy Night – Nov 2014

It’s been a long time since I last had a night out Bushcrafting in the forest, the last occasion was over a year ago and even longer since my friend Jay came with us. 8 or 9 years ago we used to be out a couple of times a month but over the last few years we haven’t managed to make our timetables fit. Thankfully we now have a plan so we can get out again regularly and this was the first of many trips all being well. We headed to our regular Bushcraft location in a spot where we have permission to have a fire, we pitched our tarp, rolled out the bivvy bags and despite the fact all the wood was wet due to recent rains an excellent night was had by all. During the evening we had to really work hard to keep the fire going, thankfully Jay had an axe with him so we managed to split some wood, strip the bark and keep the fire stocked with dry wood.

TGO Magazine – 2014 Awards – Best Outdoor Blogger

Well, it’s taken me a few weeks to write this post. At the start of last month I made an interesting discovery while posting my votes in the 2014 TGO Magazine awards, I saw my name on the list in the Best Outdoor Blogger category. As you can imagine I was very pleased indeed to see my name in an amongst names in the outdoor world who I have a lot of respect for. I would like to say thank you to whoever it was that nominated me, I love getting feedback and a nomination like this makes all that effort/hours spent editing/writing worth while.

I would like to say one thing…… Before you vote, check out some of the competition first. To name but a few….

The Outdoor filmmaker Terry Abraham, with whom I have wild camped, appeared in a few of his product advert videos and have a great respect for.

Keith Foskett, I have read his books, love following along with his blog and he has helped me with many kit recommendations.

Alan Sloman, his blog is absolutely fantastic. It is excellently written and he has done great work highlighting the seemingly never ending attack on the Scottish wild areas due to wind farm building. Having walked Lands End to John O Groats via the Pennine Way he offered me some planning advice before we set off on our PW trip, I just wish I’d followed it properly :-)

James Bulter aka BackPackingBongos, another excellently written blog that I love following. James, takes great images and really gives the feel of what it is like to get out there in the remote areas of the UK and beyond.

I’m going to stop there for now, If you would like to give your support then you can do so by voting for DeanRead.net at the following link – bit.ly/1pefRet – While you’re here… why not subscribe to my YouTube channel http://bit.ly/YouTubeDeanRead

Peak District - Kinder Scout - Grindsbrook Clough Winter Scramble

Peak District - Kinder Scout - Grindsbrook Clough Winter Scramble This is a re upload of a video I put on YouTube in 2009, I ended up with a copy write warning (understandably) due to the fact i'd used a song by Gary Moore so I subsequently deleted... Now though, it is back with more video content and the usual theme tune which I produced myself so we won't have any copy write issues :-). I parked my car (which at the time was a Mitsubishi FTO GPX Mivec) at Edale and headed up Grindsbrook Clough for a bit of winter scrambling. The weather was rather ferocious, there was lots of snow, ice and wind. It was a fantastic walk and that is why it is making a second appearance on YouTube.
