Peak District – Thirst House Cave – Bivvy Wild Camp

So, I’ve got a few items on a list of places and situations I’d like to wild camp in. One of my aims for 2015 was to camp up a tree, when I say camp up a tree I probably mean just sling up a hammock somewherehigh up in th branches and sleep there for the night. Another item on my list was to sleep in a cave, that cave was to be Thirst House (also known as Hob Thirst’s) and the time was to be tonight. My friends Ray, Jay and I headed for Chelmorton where we left the car then walked down Deep Dale in the direction of our target. The weather forecast was due to be pretty terrible which is one of the reasons we chose to camp in a cave tonight rather than summit camp or head for the usual forest. Thirst House Cave is an ancient place, I’ve no doubt its history holds lots of interesting and possibly gruesome stories. During my research about the cave I used the excellent website Megalithic.co.uk which is a treasure trove of info about historic sites around the UK. There are lots of great spots listed around the Peak District from burial mounds to stone circles and it really was a great help when I began my initial hunt for a cave.

Some of the facts I manage to unearth about the cave described burials just outside the door and also finds of Roman pottery inside. Naturally, due to its historic nature my main concern about spending a night in such a place was that we had to be extremely careful. I didn’t want to leave any trace of our time there and I certainly didn’t want to do any damage to the cave itself. I’ve seen various videos and images of people having fires in caves like this but that’s not my style at all.

Upon arrival we took off our bags and had a moment to take it all in as the rain lashed down in the Dale. The cave itself was found to be nice and dry thankfully, the entrance area has some nice places to sit and there are also some great spots that are perfect for a few bivvys.

After a short rest I headed over to the opposite side of the valley to get a better look at another small cave, I also wanted to get a better shot back towards Thirst House too. Night fell soon after and it went dark very quickly, at around 16:30 there was no light coming in from outside at all. Thankfully we had ample lighting, Jay and Ray had bought candles and I’d remembered to bring a small lantern with me which came in very handy for some interesting long exposures.

Naturally we had to explore the depths of the cave itself, so we armed ourselves with as much light sources as possible and headed back as far as we dare. the Megalithic website mentions that there is a drop of 6ft and it then opens out in to another cavern which splits of in to numerous others. Over the years there have been a series of cave ins reported so we didn’t venture too far, none of us are trained cavers or stupid so it was a matter of putting safety first :-)

We ventured back down through a small gap in to the second part of the cave, it was noticeably warmer and a lot more humid too. I had to keep cleaning the lens on my camera as it was steaming up due to the humidity. There was some amazing cave graffiti and we even made friends with a mouse who was living back there. Ray was the bravest of the gang and he ventured further than Jay and I felt comfortable doing. It would be absolutely amazing to come back here some day with experienced cavers who have all the kit, there are evidently some great little cracks and crevices to explore. After our foray in to the back we came out in to the relative safety and familiarity of the main cavern. Thankfully the cloud had cleared and I immediately grabbed my camera to see what shots I could get of the cave and the stars.

A great evening was had by all and we settled down for what we hoped would be a comfortable sleep in our bivvys. During the night I awoke a few times to strange noises in the cave and also the odd sound that must have been small rocks falling at the back. All in all I did sleep pretty well and when daylight arrived we could see that we had a nice covering of snow outside.

Jay and I had got work that night so we decided not to linger too long and make tracks back to the car. The beauty of bivvying is that everything is easily packed away in no time at all.

The walk back to the car took around 30 minutes and it was thoroughly enjoyable out there in the fresh winter wonderland, this flurry was the first snow of 2015 in the Peak District and I’m so glad we managed to catch it. The sun was rising as we arrived back at Chelmorton and it was then time to head home. It was a really great little adventure and I’m so glad that I got to tick off one of the items on my wild camping bucket list.

Peak District – Wild Camping above the clouds on Kinder Scout

This weeks mini adventure will officially go down as my favourite ever solo wilds camp in the glorious Peak District, all the conditions were perfect to make it a night to remember. I arrived in Edale to clear skies and as I walked up Kinder Scout the mist / cloud began to roll up the valley and over the Great Ridge. I spent a mesmerising 7-8 hours time lapsing everything I could see from cloud inversions to the moon and stars. If every wild camp in the future was exactly like this, then I would be very happy indeed :-)

Autumn – Forest Wild Camping – Tarp & Bivvy

In this video I head out in to the forest again with my friends Ray & Jay, autumn is in full swing and we made the most of the seasonal splendour that is currently on offer. As always I took a walk up to the forest which I try to vary each time so the footage is different. This time I decided to bring the Canon 7D armed with a 50mm F/1.4 to give it a go, I had inherited it while in Australia from my father when he switched to a mirrorless camera, I’m very happy indeed with the quality of video that it has produced and I’m certainly looking forward to doing more with it.

Once again I used my Terra Nova Adventure 2 Tarp paired with an Army Issue Goretex Bivvy, Jay was using his DD Hammock and Tarp which you can see in the video.

It was also the third outing of my Rode VideoMic Go which I’ve been very happy with, I love the fact that it is powered by the camera as I know I’d forget to switch it on if I’d gone for the Pro version. The Dead Cat wind protector did it’s job this time but I’m yet to see how it really performs in high winds, no doubt I’ll give it a thorough testing in the weeks to come and I’ll let you know what I think.

Walking back down to the village in the morning

We had a really great night relaxing by the fire, the colder months are certainly on their way now as it was very chilly away from the fire, if i’m honest I probably could have done with my down jacket. All being well I’ll be out in the Peak District again in the next week or so and more than likely returning to the forest again in the near future. As always, thanks for watching / reading / listening and I’ll speak to you again soon.

The music in the video is by myself “Dean Read – Drifting Away”, you may recognise it from my 2014 Highlights Video. Footage shot with a Canon EOS 7D DSLR with a Canon EF 50mm – f/1.4 USM Lens, a RODE VideoMic Go Microphone with a RODE Dead Cat Wind Protector and edited in iMovie

Hadrian’s Wall – Coast to Coast – May 2014

This is part one of my Hadrian’s Wall Coast to Coast trip that I walked in May 2014. This instalment sees us start from Bowness-on-Solway and walk to the Bleatarn Campsite east of Carlisle on Day 1, from there we then walked to Greenhead on day 2 and had our first glimpses of the wall.

The 2nd instalment of our Hadrian’s Wall Adventure is dedicated to our 3rd day. We set off from Greenhead and had an awesome day climbing up and down along the crags towards Steal Rig, Housesteads and then down to Chollerford. After dinner at the George Inn we set off at 21:00 to walk another 12 miles to our finishing point at Harlow Hill, we eventually arrived there at 01:15 after walking nearly 32miles.

The 3rd and final instalment of our Hadrian’s Wall walk is dedicated to days 4 and 5. We set off from Harlow Hill on day 4 and ended in Newcastle upon Tyne where we had some great night time views of the Tyne bridges. On day 5 our day started with a gruesome discovery as we headed to Segedunum at Wallsend. We eventually finished the adventure at the Spanish City in Whitley Bay and dipped our feet in the sea. Thanks for sharing in our adventure.

Blog posts with images and more words will be arriving soon (hopefully) and when they materialise i’ll add links here. In the meantime why not head on over and Subscribe to my channel – http://bit.ly/YouTubeDeanRead

Peak District Walk – Monsal Dale & Ashford-in-the-Water

This videos sees us head to Monsal Dale for a nice but short circular walk of around 6 1/2 miles. We parked near the Monsal Head Inn and made our way down to the River Wye in Monsal Dale via the Headstone Viaduct. The route then took us down towards Deep Dale and eventually to ancient Packhorse Bridge at Ashford-in-the-Water. After a short stop to feed the ducks we then made our way up the hill and back around to Monsal Head. It was a short but sweet wander but ideal for a quick outing, we finished the walk with lunch at Hobb’s Cafe before heading home.

Bushcraft – Forest Wild Camp – Canon 7D & RODE VideoMic Go Test

Sometimes you just have to head out for a wild camp regardless of the weather, in this video my friend Jay and I head out to our regular Bushcraft forest for an overnighter in the rain. I’d got some new toys to play with so I was determined to get out and give them a try. I had recently acquired a Canon 7D and also purchased a Rode VideoMic Go to improve the sound a little. I managed to use it quite a lot before the weather got too bad and it was packed away in a dry bag. Despite the weather we had a really great night out and have plans for more trips further afield very soon.

Peak District – Wild Camping – Dovedale Tarp & Bivvy

In this video I meet up with my friend Rich for an overnighter on a hill above Dovedale, a #MicroAdventure style trip. we met up at Ilam and had a great walk through Dovedale to Milldale and then went for a few beverages at the George Inn at Alstonefield while we waited for the day walking crowds to disperse. At around we 8pm we made our way back to Dovedale and found a fantastic little spot overlooking the dale itself. A great night was had and we awoke to a fantastic display of cloud and mist rolling around down in the valley. After a sharp descent back down we crossed the River Dove (wet feet) before heading back to the cars and off to work.
