London Weekend – Morrissey at the O2 Arena

This weekend my partner and I went to London to see Morrissey at the O2 Arena and I thought I’d record a vlog of the proceedings. We set off from home and made our way down to London via Mark Knopfler’s British Grove Studios in Chiswick. We had booked to stay for a night at the Hilton at Canary Wharf, needless to say it was a little more plush than my preferred night on the forest floor or under canvas. From Canary Wharf we jumped on the Underground and went for pre gig food in China Town before heading to the O2 Arena.

It was the first time I’d been to the O2 and Morrissey put on a great show, he played some classic Smiths tracks along with his solo work. His latest album “World Peace Is None Of Your Business” has been received well by the music press and I rate it as one of my favourite post Smiths records. Sadly due to a dispute with the record label it was pulled from the shelves not long after release, during the show all the other members of his band were wearing t-shirts with the words “Fuck Harvest Records”.

Morrissey was on top form and gave a haunting rendition of “Asleep” after saying “Remember Me, Forget My Fate”, which obviously made me think about recent news that he is suffering from a form of cancer. He also mentioned that he took great pleasure from hearing that more than 70% of chickens being sold in the UK are contaminated with the Campylobacter bug, He then went on to play “Meat Is Murder” while the screens behind the band showed footage of animals being inhumanly slaughtered. The final track of the night was “Everyday is like sunday”, during which dozens of fans attempted to jump the barrier and storm past security to lay a hand on the man himself :-) That was my first Morrissey Live experience but I must admit I’d seen in past concert footage that fans did that. All in all it was an excellent night and I was so glad we managed to get tickets, He was only playing 1 night in England before heading to Dublin so who knows when or if he will return again.

The following day we headed to the Imperial War Museum, a place I’d been wanting to visit for a long while. That’s the only problem when visiting London for just a weekend, there are so many great museums that you could easily spend a week just visiting them. At the IWM we spent 3 to 4 hours just in the First World War Exhibit which I was very impressed by, impressed by the detail and story telling but obviously shocked by the tales themselves.

After the Imperial War Museum we headed for Westminster, the Cenotaph at Whitehall and then to Trafalgar square before heading back to pick up the car from Canary Wharf. It was a very brief visit but I’m sure we will return again soon. I feel at home in the countryside but I don’t mind visiting a city every now and then.

Bushcraft – Bivvy Night – Nov 2014

It’s been a long time since I last had a night out Bushcrafting in the forest, the last occasion was over a year ago and even longer since my friend Jay came with us. 8 or 9 years ago we used to be out a couple of times a month but over the last few years we haven’t managed to make our timetables fit. Thankfully we now have a plan so we can get out again regularly and this was the first of many trips all being well. We headed to our regular Bushcraft location in a spot where we have permission to have a fire, we pitched our tarp, rolled out the bivvy bags and despite the fact all the wood was wet due to recent rains an excellent night was had by all. During the evening we had to really work hard to keep the fire going, thankfully Jay had an axe with him so we managed to split some wood, strip the bark and keep the fire stocked with dry wood.

TGO Magazine – 2014 Awards – Best Outdoor Blogger

Well, it’s taken me a few weeks to write this post. At the start of last month I made an interesting discovery while posting my votes in the 2014 TGO Magazine awards, I saw my name on the list in the Best Outdoor Blogger category. As you can imagine I was very pleased indeed to see my name in an amongst names in the outdoor world who I have a lot of respect for. I would like to say thank you to whoever it was that nominated me, I love getting feedback and a nomination like this makes all that effort/hours spent editing/writing worth while.

I would like to say one thing…… Before you vote, check out some of the competition first. To name but a few….

The Outdoor filmmaker Terry Abraham, with whom I have wild camped, appeared in a few of his product advert videos and have a great respect for.

Keith Foskett, I have read his books, love following along with his blog and he has helped me with many kit recommendations.

Alan Sloman, his blog is absolutely fantastic. It is excellently written and he has done great work highlighting the seemingly never ending attack on the Scottish wild areas due to wind farm building. Having walked Lands End to John O Groats via the Pennine Way he offered me some planning advice before we set off on our PW trip, I just wish I’d followed it properly :-)

James Bulter aka BackPackingBongos, another excellently written blog that I love following. James, takes great images and really gives the feel of what it is like to get out there in the remote areas of the UK and beyond.

I’m going to stop there for now, If you would like to give your support then you can do so by voting for DeanRead.net at the following link – bit.ly/1pefRet – While you’re here… why not subscribe to my YouTube channel http://bit.ly/YouTubeDeanRead

Peak District - Kinder Scout - Grindsbrook Clough Winter Scramble

Peak District - Kinder Scout - Grindsbrook Clough Winter Scramble This is a re upload of a video I put on YouTube in 2009, I ended up with a copy write warning (understandably) due to the fact i'd used a song by Gary Moore so I subsequently deleted... Now though, it is back with more video content and the usual theme tune which I produced myself so we won't have any copy write issues :-). I parked my car (which at the time was a Mitsubishi FTO GPX Mivec) at Edale and headed up Grindsbrook Clough for a bit of winter scrambling. The weather was rather ferocious, there was lots of snow, ice and wind. It was a fantastic walk and that is why it is making a second appearance on YouTube. Scotland – West Highland Way – September 2007

This video is from the archive and it features one of my favourite trips to date, The West Highland Way from September 2007. Over a period of 5 days we walked, laughed, drank and drank some more while making our way from Milngavie to Fort William. We had lots of fun along the way and it truly was a trip to remember. DISCLAIMER… The footage was recorded on an old Canon A640 so it isn’t HD sadly, There is a wee bit of swearing at points throughout the video, also some terrible drunken singing, drunken air guitar and images of Mobile phones that aren’t smart or even 3G enabled… Welcome to 2007 :-)

If you would like to check out the blog posts for each of our days on the trip, then you can do so with the links below. These posts were written at the time and are a great companion to the video, especially if you would like more details instead of just the vague stupidity with which the movie is graced :-)

West Highland Way – Traveling

This is a quick entry about the fun we had on the day traveling on the National Express coach from Chesterfield to Glasgow.

West Highland Way 2007 – Day 1 – Rowardennan

Day 1 was fun, we walked a good 21 miles and slept in the Youth Hostel at Rowardennan

West Highland Way 2007 – Day 2 – Inverarnan

On day 2 we walked in all weathers from Rowardennan via Inversnaid to Inverarnan. we also celebrated at the Drovers Inn were irresponsible amounts of ale was consumed :-).

West Highland Way 2007 – Day 3 – Tyndrum

Day 3 was relatively short, just a quick one from Inverarnan via Crianlarich to Tyndrum. Crianlarich is where our West Highland way dream ended during our 2006 trip.

West Highland Way 2007 – Day 4 – Day Off

Day 4 was our rest day, we hired a nice little chalet in Tyndrum and held back a day for weather reasons.

West Highland Way 2007 – Day 5 – Kingshouse

Day 5 was a spectacular day in many ways, We walked from Tyndrum via Bridge of Orchy, Over Rannoch Moor to Kingshouse. some nice pictures on this entry folks.

West Highland Way 2007 – Day 6 – Fort William

The final day, Day 6 was a monster, Lots of miles, Lots of rain but still lots of smiles. Have a look at the review and the pictures I managed to get before my camera was totally drenched and died temporarily.

I hope you enjoy reading about our trip, We had such a great time and laughed every step of the way. Completing the West Highland Way was a fantastic achievement for all of us. I hope our words and images might inspire you to have a go yourself. I’d do it again tomorrow personally

Lake District – Scafell Pike – July 2006

This is a video from the archive which was filmed on the 1st & 2nd of July 2006. I went for a wander up Scafell Pike with Jay, Keith & Stevo. We had an amazing time on the walk and we even managed a spot of Wild Swimming :-) The video was shot with my old Canon A640 so as you can imagine it isn’t HD, I hope you enjoy it.

It was nice to sit and piece this movie together, it seems like such a long time ago and it brought back some really great memories. This was one of our first trips to the Lake District together and from that moment we were all hooked. After this adventure we went on to have lots of great trips to the Lakes, Scotland, Wales and the Peak District. The 2 or 3 years after this video was filmed were filled with lots of fantastic memories made with great friends and it’s a time in my life i’ll never forget. I wrote about this outing at the time and if you would like to view it you can head over to Trip Report Blog Post.

I included a few links in the video which are for other trips from this period in time. Those links are for the following trips

Lake District – The 10 in 10 Challenge 2014

I have just arrived home from a fantastic weekend in the Lake District, the weather was excellent and I enjoyed every last moment of it. I was in Borrowdale with a group of fellow Social Hikers from ShareYourAdventure.com to take part in the 10 in 10 Challenge in aid of The Multiple Sclerosis Society. The challenge was to climb 10 Peaks in 10 Hours or less and it all began at the Scafell Hotel in Rosthwaite.

We began by signing in at challenge HQ which was located in a small field across the road from the Scafell Hotel itself. We signed in at around 06:45, said a quick hello to team members who hadn’t camped the night before at the Chapel Farm Campsite and then the event got underway.

On our way to Peak number 1

The first Peak of the 10 was Castle Crag, a short but busy climb up the loose slate path and we were at the top. This was a new Wainwright for me and I went on to tick off another 3 fresh ones during the day.

Next was High Spy after a sharp climb up out of the valley, this was Peak number 2 and the first point at which we were required to sign in. The organisers of the event had marshall points at particular locations along the challenge route, they were required to log our numbers just to make sure no one had gone missing.

The summit of High Spy

The summit of High Spy

We descended from High Spy and headed for Peak number 3 which was Dale Head. It was a pretty sharp climb up on to the summit but I didn’t feel it as I was far too busy taking in the spectacular views down the Newlands Valley. After signing in with the Marshals we stopped for a quick break at the summit, not for too long however as we had a tight schedule to stick to if the 10 hour target was to be beaten.

After Dale Head we descended down to Honister Pass which was a point where the Marshals had a refreshment area. Water, orange juice and biscuit snacks were being dished out to keep the challengers hydrated and fuelled up. Perhaps the most welcoming thing awaiting us at Honister were the much anticipated pies which our team captain Phil Sorrell had bought for us. Phil who is the creator of Social Hiking and (@DaylightGambler) on twitter had been mentioning the very tasty Black Pudding & Chilli Pork Pies on AudioBoo and it was very kind of him to bring one for all the team.

Honister Pass and the Honister Slate Mine

Honister Pass and the Honister Slate Mine

After a refreshment stop at Honister we began the sharp climb up towards Peak Number 4 which was Grey Knotts, it is a bit of a scramble in places but over before you know it and your back on the tops once again. We checked in, took some pictures and carried on.

Looking back towards Dale Head from Grey Knotts

Peak 5 was Brandreth which was the last of the new Wainwrights for me today, I don’t even recall stopping there as I think we just carried on towards the next destination.

My favourite Lakeland Peak, Great Gable. Not on the list for today though sadly

My favourite Lakeland Peak, Great Gable. Not on the list for today though sadly

Perhaps one of my favourite views of the day was to be had at Peak number 6, Green Gable. The view down Ennerdale from here is absolutely stunning, it’s such a picturesque valley and I lapped up the vistas while we had a snack break for 4-5 minutes.

One of the best views in the Lakes? Ennerdale from Green Gable

The next section took us down from Green Gable to Windy Gap and then via the very slippery path to Styhead Tarn. I spotted the RAF Sea King Helicopter over towards Scafell Pike, picking up a casualty no doubt. I tried not to look too closely as I really did need to concentrate on the job in hand as we descended on the very loose scree.

A Sea King Helicopter above the Scafells

A Sea King Helicopter above the Scafells

Once down at the bottom of the hill I quickly filled up my water supplies using my Sawyer Squeeze Filter, there really was no time to stop today and we began the next climb of the day which was the climb up the side of Seathwaite Fell. It honestly did feel like it was near vertical at times but I guess it was just because it had been such a big day already with a brutal but necessary pace.

The view down Borrowdale from Seathwaite Fell

Thankfully we made it up and on to the top of Seathwaite in good time, I had dropped back a wee bit while filing up my water as the others hadn’t stopped, I pushed hard during the climb so I had managed to catch up once again. The views from the the top of Seathwaite Fell are stunning as you gaze down Borrowdale, once again we didn’t have time to linger long here. Snacks, pictures and then it was time to head for Esk Haus via Sprinkling Tarn.

The Langdale Valley from Esk Haus

The Langdale Valley from Esk Haus

I camped at Esk Haus a few years ago the last time I was in the area so it was great to return once again, the views down towards the Langdales today were excellent, the haze had burned off a little during the day so you could see for miles.

Derwent Water & Skiddaw from the summit of Peak 9, Glaramara

Derwent Water & Skiddaw from the summit of Peak 9, Glaramara

Peak number 8 of the day was Allen Crags, it was only a short climb up from Esk Haus and then it was time for the undulating slog over to Peak 9 which was Glaramara.

Borrowdale from Thornythwaite Fell

Borrowdale from Thornythwaite Fell

The last Peak of the day was Thornythwaite Fell which was the only peak of the day which doesn’t qualify as a Wainwright top. It is a bump on the way down in to the valley so it was tackled with ease. We had begun to pick up the pace once again as we descended in to the valley bottom as the mission was to get back within 10 hours.

Phil Sorrel and Yours Truly at the Finish Line

Phil Sorrel and Yours Truly at the Finish Line

Once at the valley floor we made excellent time as we blitzed out the final mile or so back to Rosthwaite. I had forgotten exactly what time we set off that morning so I was willing to run the last few miles if need be to get back in time, I jumped over styles, dashed through gates and paced on as fast as I could until I was rounding the final corner to the finish line.

A few of the team had done the 5 in 5 challenge instead of the 10 in 10, as you might guess this was 5 Peaks in 5 Hours. We all eventually regrouped at the Scafell Hotel so the socialising could begin, we had been concentrating on the job in hand all day so it was great to have a chance to sit, have a drink and a good chat with everyone.
